THE STORY
Meets
La Rioule was founded in 2017. It was created as part of the Grandes Médiévales d’Andilly, a must-see event for lovers of medieval festivals in Haute-Savoie (France). Initially composed of ten volunteers from the festival in various roles, the members of the group came together on the initiative of Yoann Pesenti, with the help and supervision of Claudia Humbert and Moon Beausoleil, then in charge of the artists and volunteers at the festival.
In its early years, the troupe was dedicated solely to this annual event, and the group’s repertoire remained simple, consisting of traditional pieces with Celtic and Central European roots.
In 2019, after three years spent developing the troupe’s universe, the first creations were proposed by Yoann, a professional composer.
To immortalise these first notes in their own image, the musicians of La Rioule recorded at home with rudimentary equipment: Autour de la Lanterne, an EP that brought together a selection of the original repertoire and the new compositions. These compositions became part of the group’s identity. Although not historical in form, they pay homage to the minstrels of old through their desire to tell a story, praise a character or satirise them in each song…
Inspired by the tracks on this album, gathering, travelling and diversity became major themes for the ‘riouleux’, and so the name of the group was extended to become La Rioule des Compagnons du Monde (The rioule of the companions of the world)
Songs and sharing
In 2020, lockdown years arrived and inspired them to bring medieval celebrations into the homes of those who were deprived of them, offering unpretentious videos on social media of polyphonic songs from the great medieval repertoire, such as standards popularised in their day by Malicorne, Mélusine and La Bamboche.

These videos brought visibility to the group and enabled them to launch a crowdfunding campaign to create their first ‘real’ album in studio conditions. The campaign was an unexpected success, and La Rioule recorded Les Contes du bois de Veau (Tales from the Wood of Veau), a collection of stories combining forgotten classics with Yoann’s own creations, immersing listeners in medieval and fairy-tale adventures to be enjoyed at home. This period marked the arrival of a new member, Benjamin Gaona, a videographer, who opened the door to an evolution in the videos that made La Rioule what it is and finally brought their stories to life in images.
Andrin and travelling
In 2022, after a long wait, Les Compagnons du Monde will return to the stage to perform for their audience. To celebrate this revival, a new album is in the works and will be released in spring 2023: Le voyage d’Andrin (The journey of Andrin), an epic tale to be experienced over the twelve months of the year, with the four chapters of its story unfolding at the beginning of each season.
It is also in this opus that La Rioule’s style comes into its own, moving away from traditional pieces to immerse the listener in a fictional and original universe, while retaining the concept of stories set to music. This concept evolves throughout Andrin’s journey, linking the songs on the album in a tale, guided by the arrival of a voiceover performed by Benoit Allemane.

Nowadays, La Rioule’s music draws its roots from medieval and Renaissance sounds, as well as Celtic, Breton and Occitan folklore. This melting pot of cultures is blended and mixed with modern structures guided by contemporary folk and rock codes, while retaining a resolutely acoustic form, as if to show that it is possible to create something modern from something old.
With this album under their belt, the group won the ‘big favourite’ award in the ‘music, song and dance’ category at the international ‘Fous d’histoire’ fair in Compiègne. The troupe then expanded with two new members and, in 2024, began touring France, performing at a wide variety of events.

And today...
And the story continues with a new album released in 2025: Les Voiles de l’Amarante, an album that returns to its roots by honouring Les Compagnons du Monde through a fusion of cultures.
New sounds are explored, such as sea shanties, Middle Eastern, folk and Bulgarian music, in an album-book concept, still guided by a story, characters and storytellers. It features narrators such as Alexandre Gillet and Féodor Atkine, as well as numerous guests.
That year, the group changed its name, opting for simplicity and becoming simply La Rioule.
